If you're new to the world of composing music on computers, this is the book for you. It offers a gentle and very clearly written introduction to the world of computer music production. Taking you step by step on the different parts of the process to get a complete song or track.A good book on basic music theory (such as his other book 'Music theory for computer musician's ) is a good addendum to this one, with both serving as a good introductory guide into the process of composing and producing music on the computer.Michael's writing style is very clear and focused so it's easy to follow along with all the examples and information he provides. The CD accompaniment to the book further helps to clarify every example.I definitely recommend this book to anybody who is keen on taking their music production skills to the next level.
I'm almost completely new to the field of music composition. But this book has been really great at getting me accustomed to the field. Even if you're in the intermediate stages of music composition, I would still recommend this book. I read Hewitt's other book, Music Theory for Computer Musicians, and I feel that these two books together are invaluable to musicians.
Definitely recommend this book. It has sections dedicated to different types of instruments. It points you in the right direction of where to start and what to expect as well as warning you of possible mistakes you can make. I recommend reading a music theory book first as it incorporates a lot of those principles along the way.

This is the book you need if you are a musician with FL Studio like myself. It helps explain melody, bass, harmony, drums, and more. A must have for any serious producer.
As a NOOB composing music, this book was exactly what I needed.I wanted to make backing tracks with Ableton to play guitar with. This book gave an excellent set of suggestions for what to do with the bass and drums. By introducing the physical instruments, it also explained how to make realistic bass and drum patterns, that real humans could actually play.
I'm making a transition from traditional to computer and this is what I was looking for.You need a basic understanding of music/theory as it is not a beginners music book. It offers an excellent start to computer musicianship without being overly technical or boring.
Good book. Found it useful in laying out the concepts for composition. A pretty quick read. Good style of writing.
